EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
