Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
