Less than one in 10 patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its first guidance on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidance recognises that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be treated with comprehensive and ongoing support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant hurdles to widespread availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, notes the agency.

Despite the current best projected case, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to widen access, through approaches such as voluntary licensing.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Studies points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the treatment, when their typical food cravings return.
