A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.
After minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
